Accademia Unidee is at the core of Fondazione Pistoletto’s activities and long history of production, education and research in the field of art as an instrument for a responsible social transformation.
Fondazione Pistoletto is a non-profit organisation instituted in 1998 in Biella by the artist Michelangelo Pistoletto, one of the main representatives of Arte Povera, and it’s acknowledged and supported by Regione Piemonte.
The Fondazione was established to accomplish what was theorised in the manifesto Progetto Arte: to create a new model of artistic and cultural institution placing art in direct interaction with the different sectors of society.
In 1991, finding himself in Biella for the opening of one of his personal exhibitions, Michelangelo Pistoletto decided to buy an abandoned 19th century wool mill on the bank of the river Cervo, the former Lanificio Trombetta, now a magnificent example of a repurposed industrial archaeology complex. The Fondazione has since produced a model of artistic institution as a multicultural and multisectorial centre. A place where to reconsider things, share points of view, study and research. A space for exhibitions, educational projects and artistic activities: works; installations; visual, cinema and performative arts festivals; conferences; concerts; and national and international events.
The Fondazione is structured in different operative sectors, each dedicated to the interaction of art with a specific area of the local and global social fabric, active in several contexts:
Fondazione Pistoletto is a big creative laboratory, within it art is intended as a project in progress to approach different cultures.
